Sylvester (Sly) McClearn is currently the head of business development for Topeka Capital Markets. In this role, Sly is in charge of overall corporate marketing, distribution, and strategy. He has identified alternative areas of partnership and collaboration amongst institutional, public, pension, corporate, banks, and brokerage clients.
As a partner, he is actively involved in the hiring of personnel and the establishment of overall corporate culture. Sly joined Topeka Capital Markets in 2012 after a 20-year career at Citigroup, where he served in various equity sales and management roles.
While at Citigroup, he was head of ICG middle markets for Citigroup Equities. He was a managing director and senior member of the equity management team. Sly was involved in every aspect of managing the ICG MM business and among his responsibilities concentrated on P&L, strategic planning and development, recruiting, client and sales development, and resource allocation. Prior to this appointment, Sly was head of sales for IIG and a senior institutional salesman in equities.
Sly was also an active member of the ICG diversity committees both in U.S and abroad. He chaired its heritage committees and had strongly supported the recruitment, mentoring, and retention efforts of minority candidates and employees. He had conducted firm-wide presentations at major colleges and universities in both Europe and the U.S. for the firm's summer intern, analyst, and associate programs.
Sly joined predecessor company Salomon Smith Barney in 1993 and has held several equity sales and trading positions. In 1997, he managed the international sales and trading desk in New York and later relocated to London from the period of 1998 to 2002 to help manage and build the firm's European sales and trading equity efforts. While in London, Sly was a valued member of the global sales and trading management team. He repatriated in August of 2002 to help Citigroup focus on institutional middle market clients.
Prior to joining Citigroup, Sly worked for The Drexel Burham Lambert Group, from 1986 to 1990, and for Natwest Securities Corporation, from 1990 to 1993.
Sly received both a B.S. (1986) and M.B.A. (1988) from Fordham University and is a series 3, 7, 9, 10, and 24 licensed professional. A recipient of an athletic scholarship for varsity football and basketball, Sly served as a captain of the varsity football team for two years and later, as a graduate assistant varsity football coach. He was an executive committee member of the Board of Trustees of Fordham University for 7 years and served as chair of the student affairs committee.
Sly and his wife, Kathleen Powell McClearn, are raising their wonderful children, Alison Marie (20) and Miles Christopher (18) in the diverse community of Montclair, NJ. Sly and Kathleen both love to travel and have actively traveled throughout the U.S and Europe. Their favorite place is in Scotland, which is, ironically, where the McClearn name originates.
Sly's hobbies include jogging, weight lifting, basketball, golf, tennis, chess, and reading.
